Keep an Eye Out for AI Scams

April 7, 2024 If there’s anything we know for sure about scammers, it’s that they’re going to take advantage of new technology. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is creating a buzz right now – and making it even harder to tell the difference between what’s real and what’s totally made up.
Here are three common AI scams to be aware of:
  • Deepfakes – This happens when scammers use AI to impersonate someone, usually a famous person. Software pulls existing photos, videos and audio from a celebrity and can publish this “person” saying and doing things online, leading you to believe they’re actually endorsing a product or investment scheme. Do a Google search of these products and services to check their legitimacy.
  • Voice Cloning – A form of deepfake, this scam is able to make a caller sound just like your loved one or friend. Voice clone scams often target grandparents, wanting them to believe a family member is in trouble and needs money. If you receive a call like this, hang up and call your loved one directly.
  • Convincing “Phishing” Attempts – AI tools like ChatGPT can create calls, texts or emails in seconds that are grammatically correct, friendly and natural. But they’re really fishing for info to steal your money or identity (see where the scam’s name comes from?). If you’re not sure if the communication is real, contact the organization (financial institution, insurance company, etc.) directly.
